Install Intellij SFCC on as many computers as you like. Your license, or your organization seat, is used by one device at a time. When you move to another computer, close VS Code on the first one and the license follows you
This applies to the VS Code extension and to paid licenses and seats. Trials are not affected, and the JetBrains plugin is licensed separately
What counts as one device
A device is one computer and one operating-system user. Everything you run there shares the same license and never conflicts:
- Every VS Code window, profile, and workspace
- VS Code Stable and Insiders, and VS Code based editors such as Cursor and Windsurf
- Remote SSH, WSL, and dev containers. The extension runs on the local side, so remote work counts as the computer you are sitting at
A second operating-system user on the same computer, a virtual machine, or a copy of the extension's storage on another computer is a separate device
Switching devices
| Situation | What happens |
|---|---|
| You close VS Code on the first computer | The license is free right away. Open VS Code on the second computer and keep working |
| The first computer is asleep, crashed, or offline | The license frees itself after 5 minutes without activity. Until then the second computer is paused; use Use on This Device or wait and reload |
| Both computers are open | The device that started first keeps working. The other one pauses until you switch |
If a notification says Your license is also active on another device, nothing is paused yet. It is a heads-up that the same license is open on two computers
A paused device never takes the license back on its own. Reload the window or restart VS Code to check again, or choose Use on This Device to switch now
When this device is paused
Intellij SFCC stops its language servers, MCP server, uploads, and views on the paused device. You see a notification, the status bar shows Intellij SFCC paused with the reason, and every Intellij SFCC view shows the same message with the actions below. The Account panel and status bar keep working, so you can always see why and switch back
| Action | Use it when… |
|---|---|
| Use on This Device | You want to work here now. After you confirm, Intellij SFCC continues on this device within seconds and stops on the other one within about a minute. The confirmation shows how many switches are left today |
| Reload Window | You closed VS Code on the other computer, or 5 minutes have passed since it went to sleep |
| Manage Devices | You want to see where your license is active, rename a device, or sign one out. Opens Settings → Security → Devices in your dashboard |
You can also run Intellij SFCC: Use License on This Device and Intellij SFCC: Manage License Devices from the Command Palette
Switching is limited to 3 times in 24 hours. Organization owners can turn off Use on This Device for their members; in that case close VS Code on the other computer first, then reload
Why a device was stopped
| Status bar | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| paused - in use on another device | Your license is active on another computer | Close VS Code there and reload, or use Use on This Device |
| paused - moved to another device | You chose Use on This Device on another computer | Reload this window and switch back if you want to continue here |
| paused - signed out on this device | The device was signed out from the dashboard, or the access key was regenerated | Reload the window. If the access key changed, enter the new one first |
| paused - update required | This version of the extension is too old to verify the license | Select Update Extension, then reload |
| paused - copied installation | The extension's storage was copied from a computer that is active right now | Close VS Code on the other computer, then restart VS Code here |
A stopped window does not resume on its own, even after the other device closes. Reload the window or restart VS Code to start a new license session
Manage your devices
Open Settings → Security → Devices in the dashboard, or select Manage Devices in VS Code. You see the device using your license now, the devices used in the last 30 days, and recent switches and sign-outs
- Rename a device so you recognize it later. Organization admins never see your device names
- Sign out a device to free your license right away, for example when a laptop is at home and still holds it. Intellij SFCC stops on that device within about a minute. You can sign out 3 devices per day
- If you see a device you do not recognize, sign it out and regenerate your access key on the same page. Every device then needs the new key
When another device takes over your license, we may also send a security email so you know it happened
Organizations
Every member's seat follows the same rule: one seat, one developer, one active device at a time. Members switch between their own computers as described above. A seat cannot be used by two people at once, so people who share a seat need their own
Owners and admins who manage seats see on the Members page who is active now, how many devices each member used in the last 30 days, and when a seat was used on several devices at the same time. They never see the names of members' devices. The Use on this device switch on the same page controls whether members can move their seat from VS Code
